Lakeshore, Coconino National Forest, December 2012
Well, there I go again, shooting into the sun with a point-n-shoot camera. Supposedly you shouldn't do that, but so far I haven't had any problems come from it. The two cameras I've ruined have all been due to dropping them on the ground or getting dust inside the body to the point where it wouldn't focus properly.
No, I didn't walk out there.
love the black and white earth contrasted by the blazing blue sky. I never heard that about the sun and cameras, either, better watch out from now on.

Yeah, supposedly the lens focuses the sun down onto the camera's sensor and it can overheat the electronics, kind of like using a magnifying lens to burn paper, etc. Point-n-shoot cameras are more at risk because they don't have a mirror that shields the sensor like DSLR cameras - the light is always falling on the sensor when the camera is on. I don't think it's a serious risk (as I said, I've never had a problem with it) but I can see it causing problems if you were focusing directly on the sun for a long time, like with an eclipse or something.
