Yesterday while walking on north NAU campus I caught a flash of color out of the corner of my eye and saw this amazing fellow (or lady!):
It's a Lewis's Woodpecker, one of several species of woodpeckers you can see in Flagstaff. These guys are fairly rare around here so to see one so close and to be able to photograph it was a real treat. You can't really tell from this picture, but its face was a deep red color.
This particular bird was busy examining every nook and cranny of that tree for bugs. Even though it was quite large it was easily able to hang upside down to get at difficult spots.
